In the district of Karongi, residents are expressing their deep appreciation for the transformative work done by the Rwandan Red Cross (CRR) through its model village promotion program. This initiative, aimed at alleviating poverty by fostering mutual aid and social cohesion, has been met with widespread acclaim from the local community.
In the Gitarama cell of Bwishyura sector, over 400 latrines have been constructed, livestock distributed, kitchen gardens established, potable water provided, and the community encouraged to join solidarity clubs. These efforts, which have cost a total of 50 million Rwandan francs, have significantly improved the lives of many.
Donatille Mukantwari, one of the beneficiaries, shared her story of transformation: “The Red Cross gave me a goat, which later allowed me to acquire a dairy cow. I also joined a solidarity club, where I was able to save money. Today, my house has been renovated, my children attend school, and I can afford health insurance. In short, I’m living a normal life, a far cry from the misery I endured before the Red Cross’s intervention.”
Rose Nyirashyirambere, the head of Gitarama village, highlighted the significant impact of these programs on the community: “These Red Cross initiatives have played a crucial role in improving our people’s lives. They have reduced malnutrition, lowered school dropout rates, and strengthened mutual aid and social cohesion.”
Despite these achievements, Rose Nyirashyirambere urged the community to strive for self-sufficiency: “We encourage the population to work towards self-reliance, as external assistance will not last forever.”
Emmanuel Mazimpaka, Director of Communication and Humanitarian Diplomacy at the CRR, expressed satisfaction with the positive outcomes: “We are delighted to see these initiatives benefiting the population. They are designed to protect the people and enhance their well-being and socio-economic development.”
He reiterated the CRR’s commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals: “The Red Cross works to protect and uplift those in vulnerable situations, without condition or discrimination, and to help them build resilience.”
The residents of Karongi are unanimous: the actions of the Rwandan Red Cross have changed their lives and restored their hope for a better future.
These activities were part of the Rwandan Red Cross’s efforts during the 2023-2024 fiscal year in the Karongi District, particularly in Bwishyura Sector. The CRR built 120 latrines valued at 14 million Rwandan francs, provided 400 livestock worth 20 million Rwandan francs, and donated an ambulance to the Kiziba refugee camp, worth 75 million Rwandan francs.
