Gisagara: “Gisagara Model Village” Project Transforms the Lives of Vulnerable Residents

As part of efforts to improve the living conditions of vulnerable communities, the Model Village Program being implemented in Gisagara District continues to make a significant impact by boosting household incomes, improving social welfare, and helping residents strengthen their resilience against disasters.

The initiative is being implemented by Rwanda Red Cross with support from the Japanese Red Cross Society. The project currently operates in 10 villages located in Mukindo Sector.

According to Gasana Callixte, Director of the Gisagara Model Village Project (GMVP), the main objective of the initiative is to help vulnerable families achieve better living standards through sustainable development activities and economic empowerment.

“Our goal is to improve the livelihoods of the most vulnerable people in the community,” he explained.

Gasana further noted that the Model Village approach has played a major role in strengthening collaboration between residents, local authorities, and development partners, allowing communities to actively participate in decisions affecting their welfare and access the support they need.

Habineza Jean Paul, Deputy Executive Administrator in charge of Economic Development in Gisagara District, stated that the activities carried out by the Red Cross align with Rwanda’s national development priorities.

“These activities are in line with our country’s vision for social welfare and economic transformation. The infrastructure and livestock support provided through these projects greatly benefit our citizens,” he said.

He added that discussions had already taken place regarding previous projects implemented in recent years, particularly those focusing on hygiene, sanitation, and access to infrastructure. He also revealed that a new project is planned for the coming years, aimed at promoting hygiene and sanitation in schools.

“We want children to grow up with a culture of cleanliness so that future generations can build healthier communities by 2050,” he added.

Speaking about the overall image of the Red Cross in the district, Habineza praised the organization for its long-standing partnership with local authorities.

“The image of the Red Cross is very positive because we have worked together on several successful projects over the years,” he said, adding that discussions are ongoing on how the partnership can continue in the future.

Residents benefiting from the project say it has helped them better understand disaster risks and how to prevent and manage them effectively. They also explained that community training sessions and awareness campaigns have improved their knowledge of hygiene, nutrition, and public health.

The project has also focused on supporting income-generating activities and the establishment of cooperatives, which residents say has strengthened economic development, unity, and social cohesion within the community.

The first phase of the project concentrated on improving household economic capacity and developing infrastructure such as access to clean water, electricity, healthcare services, and education for vulnerable families.

Volunteers from the Rwanda Red Cross have also been trained in disaster prevention and emergency response to ensure rapid intervention during disasters and urgent health situations.

The Gisagara Model Village Project (GMVP) is expected to benefit more than 5,000 residents and is valued at over one billion Rwandan Francs.
