Gisagara: Governor Kayitesi Alice Inaugurates Major Water Pipeline in Mukindo Sector

In a landmark event for the Gisagara district’s Mukindo sector, Governor Kayitesi Alice of the Southern Province, in partnership with Red Cross-Rwanda, has inaugurated a new water pipeline. This significant infrastructure project, valued at 380 million Rwandan Francs, promises to transform the lives of the local community by providing reliable access to clean water.

The launch of the pipeline has been met with widespread enthusiasm from the residents of Mukindo, who have long struggled with water scarcity. Prior to the installation of the new pipeline, fetching water was a daunting task, particularly for children who had to embark on lengthy journeys to distant water sources.

Uzamushaka Selaphine, a local resident, shared the challenges faced by the community: “Kids would leave early in the morning to get water and not come back until around 9 o’clock. Now, thanks to the work of President Paul Kagame and the Red Cross, we have water close by.”

Another resident highlighted the profound impact of the project, noting that the previous 45-minute trek to fetch water is now a thing of the past. “Life is better now, and our children can go to school looking clean and neat,” they said.

Francoise Mukandekezi, the Director of Red Cross-Rwanda, emphasized the broader significance of the water pipeline, while also hinting at future initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of Rwandans. “We have done similar projects in other parts of Rwanda, like giving clean water and domestic animals to help people,” Ms. Mukandekezi remarked.

Governor Kayitesi Alice underscored the transformative potential of the water pipeline, stating, “This water pipe is a big help. It will give clean water to about 30,000 families.” She also highlighted the collaborative efforts between the government and the Red Cross as part of a larger strategy to address the challenges posed by climate change.

The inauguration coincides with the 62nd anniversary of Red Cross-Rwanda, celebrated under the theme “Strive for Freedom.” The theme resonates with the essence of the new pipeline, symbolizing freedom from the burdens of water scarcity.

The successful completion of this project marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve living conditions in Rwanda, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment.
