In response to the recent detection of Monkeypox cases in Rwanda, the Rwandan Red Cross has intensified its efforts to combat the spread of the virus.
A key component of this initiative was the recent training of 40 volunteers from districts bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, focusing on the prevention and control of Monkeypox.
The training, which concluded on August 9, 2024, in Karongi District, was part of a broader strategy by the Rwandan Red Cross to enhance the country’s preparedness against emerging health threats.
Emmanuel Mazimpaka, the Director of Communications and Humanitarian Diplomacy at Rwandan Red Cross, highlighted the critical role that well-trained volunteers play in responding to such outbreaks.
“Enhancing the capacity of our volunteers is crucial, they are on the front lines, and their ability to act swiftly and effectively can make a significant difference in controlling the spread of Monkeypox,” Mazimpaka said.
The Rwandan Red Cross is also focusing on strengthening partnerships with local authorities to ensure that accurate and timely information reaches communities. This approach is vital in areas where misinformation or lack of awareness can exacerbate the spread of the virus.
“Our volunteers are collaborating with local leaders to deliver key messages through community meetings, citizen assemblies, and other platforms, this collaboration is essential in ensuring that everyone understands the importance of the preventive measures in place,” Mazimpaka added.
The volunteers, who are now equipped with detailed knowledge of Monkeypox, have committed to raising awareness in their respective communities.
Urayeneza Teta Perusi, a volunteer from Rusizi District, emphasized the importance of this outreach, especially in border areas that face higher risks of transmission.
“We live near the border, which increases our vulnerability, this training has empowered us to better understand Monkeypox and to educate others on how to protect themselves,” ” Perusi explained.
The training also served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining vigilance during health crises. Saiba Jacques, a volunteer from Nyabihu District, noted that the refresher on handling outbreaks was timely and necessary.
“The knowledge we’ve gained will help us respond more effectively if an outbreak occurs in our community,” Jacques said.
The Rwandan Red Cross has urged its volunteers to continue sharing their knowledge with others and to stay committed to the fight against Monkeypox. The organization recognizes the need for sustained efforts in educating the public and maintaining high standards of preparedness.
Monkeypox, which can be transmitted through close physical contact, kissing, and sexual intercourse, presents significant public health challenges. The virus causes symptoms such as fever, joint pain, headaches, and itchy rashes, making early detection and prevention critical.
Rwandan health authorities are calling on citizens to remain alert and follow the recommended preventive measures to help stop the spread of Monkeypox. The collaboration between the Rwandan Red Cross and local communities is seen as a key factor in achieving this goal.
