Rwanda emerges as regional hub for German language certification amid rising global opportunities

Rwanda is steadily positioning itself as a regional center for German language certification, attracting candidates from across East and Central Africa as demand for international education and employment opportunities continues to grow.

This development was highlighted on April 19, 2026, during a certificate awarding ceremony for candidates who successfully completed German language exams under the ECL system, organized by Der Sprachen Hub German Language Academy.

The expansion follows the official licensing of the ECL German Exam system in Rwanda on December 3, 2025, granting the institution authority to administer internationally recognized exams locally.

Speaking at the event, Mwizerwa Mulisa, CEO of Der Sprachen Hub, said the progress reflects a growing shift among Rwandans and regional candidates toward global opportunities.

“We are seeing a strong increase in demand because people now understand that learning German opens doors to education and employment abroad, especially in Germany,” he said.

The first examination session held in February 2026 attracted over 70 interested candidates, with more than 34 registering and completing 96 exam units across B1, B2, and C1 levels.

According to Mulisa, this initial phase confirmed that Rwanda was ready to host internationally recognized certification systems.

“The first session gave us confidence that there is real demand for quality certification in Rwanda,” he added.

Momentum accelerated during the April 2026 session, where participation grew significantly. Interest tripled compared to the February session, the number of registered candidates doubled, and approximately 224 exam units were administered. The introduction of the A2 level for the first time in Rwanda also expanded access to beginner-level learners.

Mulisa noted that this rapid growth is not only local but regional.

“We are now receiving candidates from different countries, which shows that Rwanda is becoming a trusted center for German exams in this region,” he said.

Recent sessions attracted participants from Burundi, Uganda, Cameroon, and Zimbabwe, with additional interest coming from Kenya and Tanzania, further strengthening Rwanda’s position as a regional hub.

Learners who completed the exams emphasized that success depends on discipline and proper training. Mugisha highlighted the role of structured learning and teacher support.

“Here, we had all the materials we needed, and teachers closely followed our progress. Before exams, we spent a full month preparing, which helped us perform well,” he said.

Similarly, Egide Ntihinyuzwa stressed that mastering German requires commitment.

“German is like any other language, it needs effort and time. You must give it attention and work hard. That is what helped us succeed,” he said.

However, Mulisa also cautioned that the rapid growth in demand has led to the emergence of unqualified training centers, which could undermine progress if not addressed.

“As this sector grows, we must ensure quality. Some institutions mislead learners with false promises, and that can affect their future opportunities,” he warned.

Registration for the June 2026 ECL exam session, which opened on April 8 and will close on May 14, is expected to attract even more candidates. The exams are scheduled for June 12 and 13.

Immediately after the briefing, successful candidates were awarded certificates, with many sharing testimonies on how the qualification is already shaping their academic and professional journeys.

Der Sprachen Hub German Language Academy continues to play a leading role in expanding access to German language training and international certification, enabling Rwandans and regional candidates to connect with global opportunities.

As Rwanda strengthens its position in this field, stakeholders say maintaining high standards will be key to sustaining its credibility as a regional hub for language certification.
