Rwanda Red Cross Celebrates World Red Cross Day in Rubavu, Emphasizing Unity in Humanity

On May 17, 2026, celebrations to mark World Red Cross Day were held in Rubavu District. The day is usually commemorated every year on May 8 in remembrance of the birth of Henry Dunant, who was born on May 8, 1828 and founded the Red Cross Movement.
The event began with a football match between two teams of Red Cross volunteers. During the game, volunteers trained in first aid demonstrated their skills in assisting injured players, an effort that was highly appreciated by attendees.
This year’s celebration was held under the theme: “Keeping Humanity Alive Together.” The occasion highlighted the important role played by the Rwanda Red Cross in rescuing people in danger, supporting vulnerable communities, and improving the welfare of citizens.
Speaking at the event, Emmanuel Mazimpaka, who represented the Rwanda Red Cross, praised the dedication of volunteers and the collaboration between different institutions in supporting people affected by disasters and other challenges.
The guest of honor, Epimaque Hagenimana, noted that the activities carried out by the Red Cross contribute significantly to improving people’s livelihoods and providing rapid emergency assistance during disasters.
He added that in Rubavu District, the Red Cross has implemented numerous impactful projects that have supported residents during difficult times. Among these achievements is the construction of 150 houses for families affected by the 2021 earthquakes, a project worth more than RWF 220 million.
The organization also provided assistance to victims of disasters such as the Sebeya floods, where affected families received financial support, household materials, and other essential aid.
Other initiatives carried out by the Red Cross include building houses and sanitation facilities for vulnerable families, distributing livestock, offering first aid services, and reconnecting separated family members.
Participants at the event expressed appreciation for the continued efforts of the Rwanda Red Cross, describing the organization as a key pillar in supporting communities affected by disasters and other hardships.
The Rwanda Red Cross officially began its operations in Rwanda on July 1, 1962, and has now spent 64 years serving Rwandans through humanitarian assistance and community development initiatives.
