Residents in Karongi District, particularly those residing near the Kiziba camp hosting Congolese refugees, express gratitude towards the Red Cross of Rwanda. The organization’s ongoing efforts in implementing impactful projects have significantly improved the social life of both local residents and refugees in the area. Notably, individuals involved in agricultural initiatives facilitated by the Red Cross anticipate an enhanced quality of life, attributing their optimism to the positive outcomes expected from these agricultural projects.

“We thank the Red Cross for supporting us in cultivating potatoes. Some we will consume, and some we will sell. The proceeds will not only sustain us but will also contribute to blessing those who have children in school. These children will, in turn, recognize our efforts in securing something for them. We are genuinely happy, as there is a saying in Kinyarwanda that what is in the heart is also on the lips” Berdard Higiro said.
Murekatete Ester, a resident of Kanyarusanga Village in Rubaza Cell, Rwankuba Sector, expresses gratitude for the support provided by the Red Cross of Rwanda. She highlights the positive impact on addressing malnutrition and creating market opportunities for the community.
“We were in poverty, but with Red Cross support, we received seeds, as you can see the activities here. We are planting with the hope of self-sufficiency, feeding our children, and selling surplus produce in the market. We are thankful” Murekatete explains.
Nyirahabimana Marie Chantal shares her experience, stating, “We formed care groups, and Red Cross selected us to choose an activity, be it agriculture, animal husbandry, or sewing. We chose agriculture, and they supported us with money and seeds. Now, seeing the positive outcomes, we are happy.”
Mushimiyimana Jerome, representing the Abahuje group consisting of 108 people, expresses happiness with the Red Cross’s support, bringing the community together for development, said “The work that the Red Cross of Rwanda has brought us is excellent. People are happy, and they see the benefits of working collectively. The Red Cross encouraged us to work together, provided seeds, fertilizer, and overall support, contributing to our productivity.”
Emmanuel Mazimpaka, Director of Communication at the Red Cross of Rwanda, highlights the diverse range of activities undertaken by the organization in the Kiziba camp, Karongi District, aimed at assisting Congolese refugees. These initiatives encompass the provision of essential items such as blankets, clothing, and cleaning materials. Additionally, collaborative efforts have been directed towards various wetland projects involving both refugees and local residents in the Rwankuba sector.
The Red Cross has actively engaged in supporting agricultural cooperatives within the Kiziba camp, bridging the gap between refugees and citizens. Mazimpaka outlines the multifaceted support, including leasing fields, providing seeds, and offering training in agriculture and animal husbandry to enhance harvest yields. Cooperative training aims to empower both refugees and locals economically, fostering self-sufficiency and addressing social challenges.
In addition to agricultural projects, the Red Cross has facilitated initiatives in sewing and various professions, encouraging active participation in work. The financial commitment to these activities in the Kiziba camp and Rwankuba sector over the past two years has exceeded 500 million.
Mazimpaka emphasizes the Red Cross of Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to supporting diverse areas to address the challenges faced by refugees and local residents, promoting overall well-being. The recent donation of equipment, valued at approximately 40 million, includes a modern medicine cabinet, doctors’ uniforms, and various tools aimed at ensuring proper medicine storage and longevity, contributing to the health and sustainability of the community.
