Rwanda to host the Kigali Triennial Festival for the first time

From February 16 to 25, 2024, Rwanda hosts for the first time the “Kigali Triennial” international cultural festival, which will bring together more than 200 artists from 25 countries around the world. The festival will feature more than 60 performances including dance and song artists, fashion shows, theater, cinema, art, and more.

This festival is organized by the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development in collaboration with the City of Kigali and Rwanda Arts Initiative with the theme: “The Union of Art, Science, and Economy”; It will be held every three years. Its purpose is to showcase the talents of artists and their works, in order to promote international cooperation. It is also an opportunity to showcase Rwandan art in the international arena and continue to showcase Rwanda as a home for the development of art based on culture.

The State Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development Sandrine Umutoni explains that the Government will continue to support art as one of the ways to develop the youth.

“The Government of Rwanda knows the value of art in the development of the youth, which is why it supports art activities such as the ‘Kigali Triennial’. Art is a powerful channel for building the unity of Rwandans, but it is also an important pillar in creating jobs to improve the country’s economy, and to leave the cultural heritage of our country” Said Sandrine Umutoni.

The festival will be attended by celebrities such as Dorcy Rugamba, artistic director of the Kigali Triennale, filmmakers Sonia Rolland and Katy Ndiaye, Senegalese gallerist Benita Cissé, actresses Atome and Isabelle Kabano, and music legend Khadja Nin who will host a concert the finale will feature popular artists such as Kivumbi, Mike Kayihura, Bushali, Kaya Bhinshi and Alyn Sano. The concerts will be held at popular venues in Kigali including Camp Kigali, Canal Olympia, Cinê Kwa Mayaka in Nyamirambo, and the Marriott Hotel.

In addition to the performances, the Kigali Triennial Festival will provide a platform for discussions, workshops, and courses, which will connect professionals and participants.

The Mayor of the City of Kigali, Dusengiyumva Samuel said that the City is happy to host this cultural festival that aims to promote international cooperation in the arts.

He said: “We are very happy to host the Kigali Triennial in the beautiful and clean city of Kigali. We encourage the residents of the City to participate in the festival in large numbers because everyone will be able to enjoy it due to the various programs that have been prepared.”
