On April 25, 2025, the Rwanda Red Cross joined Rwandans in commemorating the 31st anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, with a strong call to promote Humanity as a pillar of Rwanda’s continued growth and resilience.
As a concrete expression of this value, the Rwanda Red Cross extended support to 30 vulnerable genocide survivors in Nduba Sector, Gasabo District, by providing essential supplies and financial assistance valued at 7.5 million Rwandan francs.
Leaders speaking at the event emphasized that fostering Humanity is fundamental to building a safe, inclusive, and respectful society. They urged all Rwandans to continue learning from history and to live out values of compassion, solidarity, and selflessness, particularly towards those facing hardships.
Marie Josée Uwamahoro, Vice President of the Rwanda Red Cross, reminded participants that remembering the Genocide must go hand-in-hand with safeguarding the progress Rwanda has made and actively confronting genocide ideology.
She said: “Today we not only honor the memory of those we lost, but we also reaffirm our commitment to preserve the achievements we have made. We must reject genocide ideology, value life, and commit ourselves to rebuilding Rwanda with Humanity at the core.”
Apollinaire Karamaga, Secretary General of the Rwanda Red Cross, praised the resilience of genocide survivors and called for unwavering efforts to promote unity and fight against any remnants of genocide ideology: “The progress you have made is commendable and honors the memory of those we lost. The Red Cross leadership stands with you. We must nurture our unity and resilience and continue teaching the youth the true history of Rwanda to prevent future misguidance.”
Narcisse Ndemezo, President of IBUKA in Nduba Sector, also applauded the Rwanda Red Cross’s support, stressing that initiatives like these play a crucial role in strengthening national unity:n “We thank the Red Cross for thinking of those who needed a place to call home. Life was once very difficult, but thanks to such initiatives, conditions are improving. No matter the circumstances, Rwandans will continue living together, and over time, those clinging to genocide ideology will be brought to justice.”
The Rwanda Red Cross affirmed that such humanitarian actions are part of a broader commitment to promoting Humanity as an enduring value that must guide every citizen in building a united, resilient Rwanda free from discrimination and division.
